THE SOCIETY

The North Midlands Society of Rugby Football Referees was formed in 1925 and is associated to the North Midlands RFU Constituent Body. The Society covers Greater Birmingham and the Counties of Hereford & Worcester and Shropshire. This is reflected in the Society logo (see right).

The Society, together with Staffordshire Referees Society, forms the West Midlands Federation. Several of the Society's officers serve on the Federation Executive as well.

This Federation is part of the Midlands Group, one of four National Groups which equate roughly to the four RFU Divisions for Club Rugby (North/Midlands/South East/South West) (see English & BUSA Leagues)

The Society provides referees to North Midlands Clubs, Schools and Universities. Occasionally clubs outside the area also have referees from the Society where they are in a League containing mainly North Mids clubs.

The Society provides referees for games up to Level 5 (e.g. Midlands Division One). Appointments at Levels 5 and 6, although Society Referees, are usually done by the Midlands Group or the Federation. Referees at Level 7 and above usually find themselves out "on exchange" refereeing in different divisions or areas. This is partly so that they gain wider experience and partly because there are only a handful of clubs in the North Midlands that have teams at that level. Occasionally a promising Referee may be used by the RFU to officiate at a National League game, usually as part of a team of three.
